Apple has a habit in using proprietary connectors for most of their devices. Instead of using standard ones they prefer to use connectors that are specific only for their products. This makes room for an entire market of third party cables and accessories. The need for third party accessories is mainly fueled by the fact that their original cables tend to be excessively expensive.

Back in 2012, Apple introduced a new standard cable to carry digital signal that would replace the classic 30 pin one. It has been named Lightning cable. It was designed in such a way that it was difficult for third party manufacturers to copy them. They have to be cracked in order to be able to copy them. Also they have a particular type of wire pairing that is different and requires the device to understand what signal to be sent on which wire. This system allowed the user to insert the connector with any side up. The lightning cable was only used until 2015 when it was replaced by USB Type-C which is now much more popular with other non-Apple devices as well.

  1. I’ve used some of those cables but they all fall apart eventually. I have been buying iXCC cables lately. They are durable, Apple certified and have a 2-year warranty. I don’t even worry about my cables now.
