Anyone that has used a GoPro knows that they have a tendency to produce unbelievable footage, but they can also create a shaky or distorted video. When the camera is subjected to sudden movements or bumps, it can affect the overall quality of the video. While the GoPro is actually intended for action shots, many people like to use it for other reasons or record normal videos.

To do this, a stabilizer is often used to make the video image steadier.

Stabilizers can vary in size, quality, and price. First, you need to determine what you need from your gimbal stabilizer, and then you can start looking at the products available, and the features they offer.

Here are a few tips on what to look for in a gimbal stabilizer, and a few reviews to help you start shopping.

A Complete Guide To Choose The Best Gimbal Stabilizers

As video cameras have become smaller, and more versatile, they have been used more frequently by average people to produce professional-quality videos. As quality has increased, the prices have gotten cheaper, so it is no longer necessary to spend a lot of money to get high-quality footage. The GoPro cameras have become very popular for consumers who are interested in preserving memories and doing so with high-quality video.

The biggest issue for the average consumer is making the videos stable to achieve that professional-level quality.

The camera itself is not necessarily going to provide this characteristic, and it is often crucial to purchase a stabilizer to help. A stabilizer will stop the common shaking appearance that is often seen in GoPro videos.

Many professionals even use stabilizers to get impressive, quality footage. Even the most inexpensive stabilizer will help to some degree by adding balance to the camera and reducing the shaky images.

Gimbal Stabilizer Features

A Gimbal Stabilizer differs from simple stabilizers in that they usually have a 3 axis system that uses several motors to keep the camera steady.

This makes the Gimbal Stabilizers more expensive than the simple stabilizers, but they give you more control over how you can angle the camera. Many of them also have rechargeable, built-in battery packs that will help increase your battery time and make your video sessions last longer.

Camera Weight

When you are considering getting a gimbal stabilizer, the first thing you need to do is think about your camera’s weight. Depending on the stabilizer, different types will support different weights, so you need to make sure the one you purchase will support the weight of the camera you have.

It is also a good idea to consider the weight of the stabilizer itself. You don’t want to add to the weight that you will be carrying around in your baggage or backpack, so lightweight stabilizers are usually suggested.

Construction and Design

When considering a gimbal stabilizer, you need to research the construction and build and see how that works for your needs. One of the first things to consider is whether you want a long or short handle.

This is a personal preference and can make a difference to some individuals. The grip of the handle is also important, and it can come in rubber, foam, and plastic.

Make sure the handle is comfortable to hold, and that it will not slip if your hand becomes sweaty. The length of the stabilizer will also depend on your preferences and needs, although keep in mind that you will probably want a longer stabilizer if you have a heavy camera.

Easy To Assemble

When you are ready to start shooting, you don’t want to mess around with a stabilizer that takes a long time to assemble. Usually, you should not have to take longer than five minutes to assemble your stabilizer.

When considering a stabilizer, make sure to check out its mount, this is important in saving time, so you can concentrate on getting great footage, or getting that awesome shot instead of wasting away the morning trying to get the stabilizer set up.

You shouldn’t need any tools to assemble your stabilizer making it is quick and easy to mount onto the camera, and if you forget the tools, it doesn’t ruin your entire shooting session.

Other Reviews

Another consideration is reading other reviews before you settle on a particular stabilizer. Reviews can give you valuable feedback from people who have been out using the product, and they will know the pros and cons when actually using it.

It’s also a good idea to read both good and bad reviews and search a few rating websites to get a good general overview.

Pairing Your Camera With Your Stabilizer

One of the most important things to decide is how well your camera will fit with the stabilizer. This entails making sure that the screws or plates of the stabilizer are capable of adjusting with the camera type, and to see if there will be any friction of the handle, and how smooth the general operation of the products together will be.

You want to be able to move from place to place without having the movement affect the camera settings. You don’t want to be wasting all your shoot time by adjusting your camera’s position constantly.

Which Gimbal Stabilizer For GoPro Cameras Is Worth Spending Money On?

Gimbal stabilizers are made to be simple and compatible with as many cameras as possible. This is why almost all of them have the same design yet some gimbals are more expensive than others. Here is how to decide which one is actually worth ordering:

  • Auto or manual calibration: Auto-calibration can be useful for the ones that are in a hurry and do not want to waste time calibrating the gimbal. Manual calibration is recommended for advanced users cine it allows for a bit more freedom.
  • With our without a mobile app: The mobile app of some gimbals can be useful but only in certain situations. Such a feature is usually present in more expensive models. Mobile apps are great for situations when the gimbal is not being held by the user. Otherwise, having the gimbal in one hand and the smartphone in the other can make it difficult to operate the camera and it can be distracting
  • Price tag: The selling price of each gimbal can vary depending on features, build quality and technology used. The budget should be set in advance in order to shortlist several gimbals then pick the one that seems to be the best one.

How Does Gimbal Stabilizer Work?

Gimbals use an IMU feature to convert camera controllers ‘ instructions into movement responses using its 3 separate rotary motors. The IMU function is the camera operator’s control mechanism.

Specifically, you’ll notice a motor on three axes around the frame when you get a 3-axis gimbal. With the sensors detect shifts, shakes and hits on these axes, electric brushless engines work to prevent such motions almost instantly.

And the camera keeps a steady head with regard to a particular direction amid all these operations.

The controller ensures that the device stabilizes multiple times a second with the three brushless engines transmitting instructions. Such commands hold the camera level clear of rotation and gimbal itself.

Best Gimbal Stabilizers – Buyer’s Guide

In this buyer’s guide, we have not only included products but also a few essential points that you need to consider when shopping for a gimbal stabilizer.

Compatibility

Not only your GoPro camera but all the newest cameras have to be compatible with your preferred Gimbal, which is why. Suppose you are actually using your normal camera and only the camera is assisted by your gimbal.

But what happens if you want to use a particular camera instead of the normal.

Battery Life

When filming or vlogging, no one wants to get stuck in the middle of the shoot. Any gimbal’s battery should last at least 5 to 6 hours, but there are a few exceptions.

You can carry new batteries and increase the overall runtime if the gimbal has replaceable batteries.

Waterproof Capability

You should consider taking a gimbal with a splash-proof or waterproof construction if you shoot continuously near a lake or a snowy area. No gadgets on the market are completely waterproof and can not be immersed in the underwater.

They can tolerate only a small amount of water and sprinkles. Yet the water-proof feature improved the life expectancy of the gimbal.

Wireless Connectivity

Easy To Assemble and Use

The camera should not take longer than 2-3 minutes to build and assemble. It may take time for you to know how to correctly mount the camera in the first two-three attempts.

  1. Hey ! What do you think about the karma stabilizer (karma grip + gimbal). Where would you rank it ? What are the pros and cons?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Concerning the EVO Gimbals GP-PRO you state ” It works with any GoPor model ” but in the Cons comments you state this ” Doesn’t not work with Hero5 Black “. You should edit this .

  3. Polaroid won’t work with Hero 5 black.
Known issues (thanks for the bad recommendation)

    1) microphone picks up motor noise
    2) mode button is unaccessible
    3) Camera mounting system doesn’t fit (I 3d printed a custom mount but installation bolt thread broke due to constant install and unistall due to mode button location)
    4) Gimbal needs to be supported by hand when it’s turned on because of the weight of the Hero 5

Probably a good basic gimbal for Hero 4, but avoid with Hero 5!!

      1. And the gimbal can’t cope with higher G-forces. (I don’t know if any gimbal can. Moderators can add these comments to the list of my first post.

  4. I disagree with this ranking of #1 for Feiyu Tech. They are overrated and have many positive reviews by people on YouTube who get stuff sent to them for free which make them bias reviews. The quality and features on their gimbals are no better than evo or DJI but their pre-sale marketing is what keeps them in the game. I have received a faulty product from the Feiyu Tech online store and they make it very difficult to deal with them when it comes to exchanging faulty accessories.
